How to Make Real Chocolate Frosting
This dreamy chocolate frosting is perfect for cakes, cupcakes, brownies, and doughnuts.
How to Make Real Chocolate Frosting
- 4 ounces unsalted butter, melted
- 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips or up to 72% high-quality chocolate, chopped
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 pound powdered sugar
Melt chocolate chips in the microwave or in a double boiler. Whisk in the melted butter. Whisk in hot water, vanilla, & salt. After they are well-combined and saucy, slowly whisk in powdered sugar. Once the powdered sugar is combined with the chocolate, whisk like crazy until frosting is smooth. Ice while the frosting is still warm. This is perfect for brownies, doughnuts, and sheet cakes.
To use on things like cakes and cupcakes, allow it to cool completely, add two more tablespoons of hot water, and then whip using an electric mixer for a few minutes until the frosting becomes light & fluffy.
This frosting can be left out in a cool room for a couple of days. Just re-whip it with an electric mixer before using it.
If using later, store the frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator and bring it to room temperature before whipping with an electric mixer to make it smooth again. It may need a couple more tablespoons of hot water since the water in it may evaporate while it is stored.
